Explore Camping on Maui

Camping in Maui is a unique and magical experience. This island itself has been voted “Best Island In The World” for over 20 consecutive years by Conde Nast Traveler’s “Reader’s Choice Awards” and is known for its lush tropical climate, scenic waterfalls, bamboo forests and world famous beaches.

Known as “The Magic Isle” traveling in a camper van allows you the freedom to pack up and explore a new part of the island each day. From swimming in the freshwater pools of Hana, to the rolling hills of upcountry Maui and snorkeling the coral reefs in the surrounding Pacific, camping on Maui is an adventure unlike any other.

Maui’s campsites are scattered along the beautiful scenic coastline with facilities that are welcoming and comfortable. There is a tradition of respect for the ‘aina (land) in Hawaii and we request that every guest adhere to this tradition. Simply put, leave the land cleaner than you found it! This way, we all do our part to keep Maui beautiful for years to come.

Maui Camping

Maui features a number of public and private campsites that are easily accessible for your camper van. Nearly all are located along the coastline with breathtaking views and scenic passes along the way. We highly recommend that you make reservations for campgrounds as soon as you book the campers. Maui is very popular and campgrounds have the tendency to sell out.

Beaches

Maui is home to some of the most breathtaking beaches in the world. From the white sand beaches of Kihei, Wailea and Kaanapali to the picturesque red and black sand beaches of Hana, Maui has more swimmable beaches than any other island in Hawaii.

Each beach is unique and known for its own individual characteristics such as boogie boarding, surfing, windsurfing, or snorkeling and abundant sea life. On many Maui beaches it is common to see Green Hawaiian Sea Turtle basking in the sun, and it is not unusual to swim and snorkel with them from shore. Hawaiian Monk Seals are also common to see on Maui beaches. These protected marine mammals are endangered and often come onto shore to sun bathe or nurse their pups, so be sure to keep a good distance if they are sighted.

Camping on Maui gives visitors the unique opportunity to explore the diverse and varied beaches that make Maui “No Ka Oi” (the best). With the ability to visit a new part of the island each day, camping in Maui allows you to explore the beautiful beaches of Maui and discover a favorite of your own.

Molokini Crater Snorkel

Molokini, a crescent-shaped volcanic crater about 3 miles off Maui’s south shore and is one of Maui’s most unique and beautiful places to dive and snorkel. The crater is home to over 250 different species of fish and is rich with sea life including Moray eels, reef sharks and hundreds of species of coral. The unique shape of the crater creates ideal conditions for visibility and protected calm, clear waters.

The backside of Molokini Crater is also one of the world’s most famous sea walls with depth of over 400 feet. Our recommendation for snorkeling Molokini is with Maui Reef Adventures. Their rafts are fast and exhilarating and arrive to the crater in less than 30 minutes. They also only take small groups (less than 30) so your experience will be highly personalized away from crowds and large tour boats.

Each winter thousands of Humpback whales return to the protected waters of the Hawaiian Islands to mate and give birth. Whale season is a magical time for both residents and visitors alike, and watching these magnificent creatures slap their pectoral fins, wave and give a jaw dropping full body breach out of the water is an experience not to be missed!

Maui Reef Adventures is our top pick for whale watch tours on Maui. Their rafts provide an up close and personal experience with whales in a small group setting away from crowds and large tour boats. Their friendly captains are knowledgeable and whale sightings December 15 – May 15 are guaranteed!
