Kipahulu, part of Haleakala National Park, is one of the most remote coastal stretches anywhere in the Hawaiian islands, and one of the most beautiful. The Kipahulu campground, located on a coastal cliffside, boasts an explosion of stars and stardust on clear nights, and during the day, you can participate in many activities and outdoor options within walking distance of your campsite. The campsite is equipped with picnic tables, barbecue grills, drinking water (near the visitor’s center) and outdoor pit toilets.
The nearby Pools of ‘Ohe’o, while closed to swimmers because of landslide danger, are beautiful to view from the short half mile walk from the Visitor’s Center. They form a series of 20 waterfalls and pools, flowing into the ocean.
For a more active adventure, walk the two miles up through a bamboo forest to another waterfall. Or for some cultural knowledge, the Visitor’s Center offers periodical guided talks, demonstrations and hikes.
Renting a camper van in Maui and camping in Kipahulu will be one of the highlights of your Maui vacation!
